If you're applying to a Turkish university, you'll hear the word Denklik constantly. It's one of the most important documents for an international student. Without it, you can't complete registration at the university, even if you've already paid tuition and received an offer letter.
In this guide, we'll break down what it is, where to get it most easily, and what documents to prepare to avoid rejection.
What is Denklik Belgesi?
Denklik Belgesi is a certificate of equivalence. It's issued by the Turkish Ministry of Education (MEB) and confirms that your foreign education (school diploma or college degree) meets Turkish standards.
Simply put: Denklik proves to the Turkish university that you actually graduated from school and have the right to enroll in university.
Where can you get Denklik?
There are two main paths. We strongly recommend the first option.
- In your country (Recommended!): Through the Turkish Embassy or Consulate (Education Department). It's free, faster, and you can do it before arriving in Turkey.
- In Turkey: Through the local education authority (Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü). This option is ONLY available with a residence permit (İkamet) or student visa. Queues can be huge, especially in September.
List of Required Documents
To submit your application, you'll need to collect a complete package. Make sure you have all originals.
- Original diploma/certificate with attachment (grades).
- Apostille on the original diploma (issued in your country!).
- Translation of diploma and passport into Turkish (notarized).
- Passport (original and copy).
- Application form (Başvuru Formu) — filled out online or on-site.
- Copy of residence permit or visa (if applying within Turkey).
Step-by-Step Application Guide
The application process is now partially digitized through the e-Denklik system.
Why might you be rejected? (Errors)
- Missing Apostille on the original.
- Incomplete document package (e.g., no grade transcript).
- Distance learning (in some cases, fully online certificates require additional verification).
- Translation errors (mismatch of names/surnames in passport and translation).
