University admission in Turkey for Russians is now simpler than for most other foreign destinations. The country is part of the Bologna Process, its degrees are recognised in Europe and the United States, and tuition at private universities is comparable to paid programmes in Russia's largest cities. On top of that, neither the EGE nor the SAT nor an extra preparatory year is required. This guide is a step-by-step walkthrough — from the first step to receiving a student visa.

Why Turkey is a relevant choice for students from Russia

Russian interest in Turkish universities is growing every year. There are several reasons.

The first is geographical and cultural closeness. Flights are frequent and inexpensive, the climate is mild and the cultural distance is noticeably smaller than when moving to Germany or France. Adaptation is significantly easier.

The second is international recognition of the degree. Turkey has been part of the Bologna Process since 2001. Degrees from accredited Turkish universities are recognised in most EU countries. Graduates of private universities — Koç, Sabancı, Özyeğin — regularly continue their studies in master's programmes in the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States.

The third is accessibility of admission. A Russian school certificate is accepted directly — a Foundation year is not required. EGE results are not mandatory. The admission process at private universities is transparent: the main criteria are the school certificate and a language test.

Visa-free entry and getting student status

Russian citizens may enter Turkey without a visa and stay in the country for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. For studies longer than 90 days you will need a student visa or a residence permit (kimlik / ikamet).

In most cases the university helps with the necessary paperwork after admission. Minors (under 18) who enter without their parents must obtain a student visa in advance — directly at the Turkish consulate in Russia.

The entire relocation process — from paperwork to finding housing — is covered in the relocation to Turkey help section.

Is the EGE required for admission to Turkey?

No, the EGE is not a mandatory requirement for admission to Turkish private universities. This is a fundamental difference from many European and American universities.

Nevertheless EGE results can be submitted — universities sometimes take them into account when awarding academic discounts. An applicant with a high score in profile subjects may be eligible for an additional reduction in tuition.

Important: you are not obliged to apply for a specialty related to your EGE subject profile. You are free to choose your programme — there are no subject restrictions.

Document list for bachelor's admission

The standard document package for an international applicant to a bachelor's programme:

  • School leaving certificate or college diploma (original and notarised translation)
  • International passport (valid for at least 6 months at the time of application)
  • Language certificate — TOEFL iBT (usually from 68 points) or the university's internal test result
  • Motivation letter in English
  • Recommendation letters (usually 1–2 from teachers or lecturers)
  • SAT, EGE — optional, may increase the discount

The exact requirements vary by university and programme. An up-to-date list of universities with their requirements is in our catalogue of Turkish universities.

Document list for master's and doctoral admission

For those applying after a Russian bachelor's or specialist degree the document list is larger:

  • International passport
  • Bachelor's diploma with the transcript (notarised translation)
  • Language certificate — TOEFL iBT 79+ or IELTS 6.0+, or the university's internal test
  • Motivation letter (Statement of Purpose)
  • Recommendation letters — 2–3 letters from academic supervisors or employers
  • CV in English
  • GMAT or GRE — required by specific programmes (common for MBA and technical fields)

What denklik is and how to obtain it

Denklik is a document confirming the equivalence of foreign education to Turkish education. Without it, final registration at a university is not possible. It is not the same as an apostille — it is a separate procedure.

Denklik can be obtained in two ways:

1
At the Turkish embassy in Russia — before departure. It takes more time, but it lets you complete the formalities while still at home.
2
In Turkey — immediately after arrival, through the Ministry of National Education (Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı). Many students prefer this option since it is easier to collect all the needed copies and translations once you are there.

Some universities help students obtain denklik themselves — check this during admission.

Tuition at Turkish private universities for Russians

Base tuition at Turkish private universities is $7,000 to $15,000 per year. Most universities offer academic discounts to international students: the actual cost can end up being $3,500 to $20,000 per year depending on the university, the programme and the level of discount.

For comparison: average paid tuition at leading Russian universities (MSU, HSE, Bauman) is 400,000 to 600,000 rubles per year. At the current exchange rate that is comparable to the lower end of Turkish private university prices — while a Turkish degree is significantly more widely accepted on the international job market.

The EGE is not a mandatory requirement for admission to Turkish private universities. You can submit the results optionally — to get an extra tuition discount.
Russian citizens may enter Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days. For longer studies a student visa or residence permit (kimlik) is issued, which the host university helps arrange.
