Istanbul Kent University was officially established on 7 September 2016, on the basis of Law No. 6745, Article 167, added to Law No. 2809, as a foundation-type higher education institution. The founder of the university is the "Engelsiz Eğitim Vakfı" Foundation (ENEV — the Foundation for Education without Barriers), established on 12 June 2015 with a mission to support the development of society in the fields of education, healthcare and culture. Kent University became ENEV's first and flagship project, embodying the ideals of accessible and inclusive higher education at an international level.
The university's main campus — the Taksim campus — has a special historical value, located in the building of the legendary German Hospital (Alman Hastanesi). This hospital was founded on 6 April 1846 by the German charitable society D.W.V. on the recommendation of Dr. Georg Hermann Ritter von Mühling. The building was rebuilt in 1874 and covers about 22,000 square meters, combining 19th-century historic architecture with modern educational spaces. Thus, Kent University students study within walls that bear almost two centuries of history — in the very heart of Taksim, one of Istanbul's most recognizable and culturally significant districts.
In the 2017–2018 academic year, the university welcomed its first 760 students, opening its doors with 2 faculties and 1 vocational school offering 19 programs. Growth was rapid: already by the 2022–2023 academic year, the number of programs had grown to 60 and the student body exceeded 6,000, with more than 1,000 of them international students. In the same year a second campus opened — the Kâğıthane campus, a modern 14-storey building with 54 lecture halls, 39 laboratories, a library, a canteen and state-of-the-art sports facilities.
Today Istanbul Kent University comprises 6 faculties (Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Economics and Social Sciences, Art and Design, Engineering and Natural Sciences), 2 vocational schools and 1 institute of foreign languages. In 2019, an advanced dental center was opened, and on 13 August 2021 the Faculty of Dentistry became a member of ADEE — the Association for Dental Education in Europe — confirming that the programs comply with international standards. The university is also an active participant in Erasmus+, with agreements with more than 200 European partner universities, opening up exchange and internship opportunities across Europe.
