The history of İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi (İKÜ) goes back to 1932, when Halil Akıngüç founded Turkey's first private educational institution — Kültür Dersevi. This pioneering step laid the foundation for an educational tradition that would later span several generations of the Akıngüç family. In 1960, Kültür Koleji (Kültür College) was opened and became one of the most respected private educational institutions in Istanbul. In 1989, the founder's son, civil engineer Fahamettin Akıngüç, established the Kültür Education Foundation (KEV), and on 15 July 1997, under the patronage of Istanbul Technical University, İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi was officially established. The university began operating in the 1997–1998 academic year with 157 students and 32 faculty members, opening its first three faculties. Today, İKÜ is a major educational complex with four campuses on the European side of Istanbul: the main Ataköy campus (45,000 sq m of indoor space and 12,200 sq m of outdoor space), Şirinevler, Basın Ekspres and İncirli. The university comprises eight faculties — Sciences and Letters, Education, Arts and Design, Law, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Architecture, Engineering and Health Sciences — as well as two vocational schools, an institute of graduate studies and a school of foreign languages. Its structure includes 59 bachelor's programs, 54 master's programs and 11 doctoral programs. By 2022, the university had graduated more than 40,900 specialists at various levels. İKÜ's engineering programs are accredited by MÜDEK and carry the European EUR-ACE quality label, ensuring degree recognition in Washington Accord countries — the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and EU member states. The Faculty of Sciences programs are accredited by FEDEK. The university actively develops international cooperation: more than 280 agreements have been signed with 124 partner institutions in 26 European countries via Erasmus+. In 2009, İKÜ founded the Center for Global Political Trends (GPoT) — an analytical research institute — and the Center for Applied Research in Criminal Law (CEHAMER) with its own academic publication "Fasikül". The university is also recognized in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for its contribution to sustainable development and innovation.
