Biruni University was founded on February 27, 2014 by the Dünya Eğitim Vakfı foundation (World Education Foundation) under Law No. 6525, adopted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The university was named in honor of the great medieval polymath Abu Rayhan al-Biruni (973–1048), who lived during the Islamic Golden Age and made outstanding contributions to astronomy, mathematics, pharmacology, mineralogy, geography and anthropology. Al-Biruni is considered one of the greatest minds in the history of humanity and is called the "father of comparative religious studies", the "father of modern geodesy" and the founder of Indology.
It was the spirit of his unquenchable thirst for knowledge and his interdisciplinary approach to science that shaped the university's philosophy. Biruni University began its academic activity in the 2014–2015 academic year, opening six faculties at once: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Education, and Engineering and Natural Sciences, together with an Institute of Postgraduate Studies and a Vocational School. From its very first days, the university set out to become Turkey's largest comprehensive medical university. In 2016, Biruni University Hospital was opened — a fully fledged university clinic equipped with advanced medical technology and staffed by experienced academic personnel.
The hospital received international TEMOS accreditation (Temos International Healthcare Accreditation) under the "Quality of Medical Care" standard, confirming its compliance with global standards of patient treatment and care. In parallel, the Dental Hospital opened, becoming the clinical base for the practical training of dentistry students on real clinical cases. Today, Biruni University offers more than 90 academic programs and welcomes over 3,000 international students from more than 75 countries. The university actively participates in the NAFSA and EAIE international education conferences, maintains partnership agreements with more than 200 institutions in 40 countries, and runs Erasmus+ exchange programs.
A strategic partnership with King's College London, ranked 31st in the world, gives students access to cutting-edge research and the academic experience of one of the United Kingdom's leading universities. The university campus is located in the historic heart of Istanbul — the Topkapı district (Zeytinburnu) — in close proximity to the Marmaray Kazlıçeşme station and the Cevizlibağ metrobus, providing convenient transport access.
